Dar es Salaam. Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) Executive Director Anna Henga, has been the second Tanzanian to receive the International Women of Courage award, following in the footsteps of Vicky Ntetema, who received the award in 2016.
Her efforts in fighting for human rights, was recognized on March 7 in Washington during 2019 International Women of Courage Award ceremony, which was hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and First Lady Melania Trump.
Speaking during the event, Secretary Pompeo emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring the courageous efforts of women.
“Women of courage exist everywhere. Most will never be honored. They face different challenges, but challenges that still matter…women of courage exist everywhere and they’re needed everywhere”, She said.
Miss Henga dedicated her entire professional career to advancing human rights in Tanzania with a particular focus on women and children.
In its 13th year, the Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award recognizes women around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment.
